GIS for Sustainable Planning and Urban Design

Instruction Modes:

Asynchronous: Online classes are offered over the course of one week. Attendance at optional virtual meetings with the instructor is encouraged but not required.
Synchronous: Online classes are offered over the course of two days (Friday & Saturday, 8:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m.). Attendance at virtual meetings with the instructor is required.
HyFlex: In-person and online classes are offered over the course of two days (Friday & Saturday, 8:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m.). Students can decide how to participate. Attendance, either online or in person with the instructor, is required.
In Person: In-person classes are offered over the course of two days (Friday & Saturday, 8:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m.).

Instruction Mode: Synchronous

The course covers cartographic and analytic techniques in GIS to assist sustainable planning and urban design. The course begins with an intensive review of data resources and cartographic techniques for effective ¿existing conditions¿ maps. The remainder focuses on spatial analysis techniques to assist in sustainable planning and urban design. Topics include: (a) use of Network Analyst for generating `walksheds¿ and evaluating ¿walkability¿ (b) using GIS to calculate indicators of smart growth and complete streets for Transit Oriented Development (TOD); (c) ¿smart growth¿; land-use scenario planning analysis; and (d) use of 3D Analyst for building 3D models, flythroughs, and form based planning.
Class format: Approximately 50% lecture, 50% application.
