Introduction to the biological and ecological diversity of California bats with an emphasis toward major conservation and management issues. Nightly fieldwork will train students in practical aspects of working with bats. Participation in bat handling requires proof of rabies vaccination. Registration must be sent to the SNFC Director.

Independent inquiry into a specific interdisciplinary issue or problem formulated by the student and approved and supervised by a member of the Liberal Studies faculty. Climate Issues and Activism Course Description: This course unites diverse areas of study through multidisciplinary learning that bridges gaps between science, design, and activism. Students will learn about environmental issues and will create a way of confronting an issue through creative practice. The goal is to support the development of student relationships with their world and to locate themselves as individuals in terms of their values when faced with difficult situations such as the climate crisis. Students will be taught about the climate crisis and environmental issues specific to California. They will be introduced to activism and change makers, and they will develop a climate campaign to either inform, or to encourage action in others that is based on what they have learned and the research they conduct. This is an intensive course and takes place at 2 locations the San Francisco State University Campus and the Sierra Nevada Field Campus.
Schedule and locations: Class starts on June 24 on the SFSU campus. Class will be held at the Sierra Nevada Field Campus from June 30th through July 6th (students must provide their own transportation). Class will be back on the SFSU campus from July 8 through 12. Classes will run from 9:00 am until 5:00 pm Monday-Friday

Description

Introduction to the natural history, ecology, and identification of insects of the Sierra Nevada. Daily field trips to a variety of Sierran localities to study insects in a number of ecological settings. Laboratories provide instruction for identifying and preserving insects. Description

Prerequisite: Upper-division standing or permission of the instructor. Introduction to the theory and practice of conservation and rehabilitation of fire-prone Sierra Nevada forests impacted by post-settlement logging, fire-exclusion, fluvial/wetland modification, and other related landscape disturbances. Includes working closely with leaders of the North Yuba Forest Partnership to identify treatment sites where a long-term monitoring program designed to assess the impacts of forest thinning can be set up and performing prescribed burns planned for sites near the Field Campus.
